Abstract:
Based on archival materials held by the Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences, the article discusses the activities of the Rare Book Department from 1946 to 2007, the latter year marking the 50th anniversary of the founding of the department. In 1957, the Rare and Old Book Section, the Art Section and the Cartography Section were merged and the Department of Old, Rare and Cartographic Publications (since 1991 – the Rare Book Department) was founded. The analysis of the Department’s activities is given in respect to the main lines of work: readers services, protection of the holdings, literature acquisitions, cataloguing, information and bibliographic work. Former staff of the department and their achievements are acknowledged.
