Vaško antspaudų sudėties tyrimai; Analysis of wax seals and their shells
Giedraitienė, Birutė
The article reports on an analysis of ten wax seals (with the shells) authenticating various
documents of 1411–1783. The seals were chosen by the sphragistics expert Dr. Edmundas Rimša
and the Head of the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Academy of Sciences Rima
Cicėnienė.
Analysed were the Great Seal of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the Small Seal of the
Grand Duchy of Lithuania, the seals of the Grand Dukes of Lithuania Žygimantas Kęstutaitis and
Kazimieras, of the Bishop of Vilnius Albertas Taboras, of the noble Jonas Skinderis, of the city of
Kaunas.
The methods of atomic absorption spectrometry (AAS) and atomic fluorescence spectrometry
(AFS) were used to determine the heavy metals in the seals. The elemental composition of
the seals and of their shells was analysed by the method of scanning electron microscopy and energy
dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (SEM/EDS). In addition, organic structure units in the matter of the
seals and their shells were specified by Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR).
The analysis was performed in the Environmental Research Department of the Environment
Protection Agency under the Ministry of Environment of the Republic of Lithuania.

Renesanso knyga Vidurio ir Vakarų Lietuvoje: sklaidos keliai ir senosios bibliotekos; Renaissance books in Central and Western Lithuania:
roads of dissemination and old libraries
Lūžys, Sigitas
The article discusses the dissemination of the printed word in the provinces of Samogitia
and Central Lithuania in the XVI century. It explores how city residents, landed gentry and clergy of
Central and Western Lithuania started their acquaintance with the book. The article also addresses
possible ways of obtaining books, bibliophilic nature of private book collections, the migration of
personal book collections to the growing libraries of educational centres. Most attention is accorded
to the XV–XVI centuries‘ books with ownership-testifying inscriptions, which are kept in libraries
of the present-day Kaunas. Some interesting copies of such books have marginals written by famous
upholders of Lithuanian culture. The author concludes that 1) the spread of books in Central and
Western Lithuania was predetermined by the establishment of the new religion – Christianity; 2) the
European orientation of the new nobility encouraged the need of higher education, which was instrumental
for the appearance of the personal collections amassed either for the purposes of study or
post-study; 3) the expansion of literacy among the lower classes made the book important as both an
educational aid and a possession; 4) the spread of books in the provinces demonstrated a more active
integration of the provinces of Lithuania into social and political life of the state.

academic community in the collection
„Bibliotheca Academiae Vilnensis“
research and possibilities of survival in the epoch of digitization
Krakytė, Asta
The article presents an overview of personal books of the members of the Vilnius academic
community of the XVIII century - the beginning of the XIX century (up to the date Lithuania
was annexed by the Czarist Russia and Vilnius University was closed), belonging to the collection „Bibliotheca
Academiae Vilnensis" of the Rare Book Department of the Vilnius University Library. The
article is boosted by the ideas of W. Zanders about the role of special collections in the context of
the library history of Latvia, by the research of the Polish scientist L. Kowkiel concerning personal
libraries of the XIX century in the area of Grodno (in Belarus) and by some significant initiatives of
the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. The aim of the article is to define the subject by
illuminating a range of problems related to the study and to the survival of the historical collection
„Bibliotheca Academiae Vilnensis" - a remarkable piece of the European culture heritage. [...]
