Abstract

Šis darbas yra pirmas mėginimas sudaryti Lietuvoje vartoto popieriaus vandenženklių atlasą. Atlaso tikslas - supažindinti mokslinių bibliotekų, archyvų bei rankraštynų darbuotojus ir visus kultūros istorikus su popieriaus gamybos technika bei istorija, pateikti mūsų krašte sutinkamus vandenženklius, svarbiausia - padėti paleografui surasti ieškomą vandenženklį, pagal jį nustatyti dirbtuvės geografinę vietą ir popieriaus pagaminimo apytikrę datą. Atlasas nepretenduoja į pilnutinį Lietuvos Didžiosios Kunigaikštystės teritorijoje XV-XVIII a. vartoto popieriaus vandenženklių rinkinį. Vienas svarbiausių vandenženklių tyrinėjimo tikslų yra knygų bei rankraščių, kuriuose nepažymėti išleidimo bei parašymo metai, datavimas. Popieriaus pagaminimo datą lengviausia nustatyti, kai ji nurodyta pačiame vandenženklyje, bet tai būna labai retai. Tada tiriamo popieriaus vandenženklis lyginamas su tokiu pat vandenženkliu datuotame popieriuje. Tokie datuoto popieriaus vandenženkliai renkami ir paskui sudaromi atlasai. Neįmanoma vandenženklių lyginti, sudėjus du popieriaus lapus. Vienas jų turi būti nupieštas, ir tada jo kontūrai lyginami su tiriamojo popieriaus lapu. Nors vandenženklio neįmanoma visiškai tiksliai nukopijuoti ranka, dauguma popieriaus tyrinėtojų vandenženklių iliustracijas piešia pieštuku per kalkę. Šiame atlase pateiktos vandenženklių iliustracijos taip pat perpieštos pieštuku per kalkę. Šiame atlase vandenženkliai grupuojami temiškai pagal jų bendrą išvaizdą. Vandenženklių pavadinimai surašyti atskirame sąraše abėcėlės tvarka. Greta lietuviško pavadinimo, jei vandenženklis yra žinomas už Lietuvos ribų, duodamas jo tarptautinis pavadinimas. Bendri lietuvių ir lenkų herbų pavadinimai surašyti lietuviškai ir lenkiškai. Vakarų Europos herbai tiktai trumpai apibūdinti. Kiekvienas vandenženklis turi eilės numerį, taip pat nurodyta popieriaus panaudojimo data bei vieta (kada ir kur dokumentas surašytas arba išspausdinta knyga) ir kur yra dokumentas arba knyga. Be to, apie vandenženklius, kurie buvo anksčiau kitų autorių paskelbti, yra atitinkamos pastabos, nurodant popieriaus panaudojimo datą.

This is the first attempt to compile an atlas of watermarks used in LithuaniaThe aim of the atlas is to acquaint the workers of scientific libraries, archives and manuscript depositories as well as historians of culture with the technique and history of papermaking, to present the watermarks that are to be found in our country and, what is most important, to assist a paleographer to find the watermark he is searching for and by it to establish the geographic locality of the paper-mill and the approximate date the paper was made. The atlas does not pretend to be a complete collection of watermarks used on the territory of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania in the 15-18th centuries. One of the main purposes in examining watermarks is to establish the period of the writing and printing of a given book or manuscript of the past which bears no imprint giving such detail. The simplest way of establishing the date of papermaking is when it is shown in the watermark itself - a very rare case this. In other cases the watermark is compared with the same watermark on a dated document. Watermarks on dated paper are collected and atlases compiled from them. It is impossible to compare watermarks by putting two sheets of paper together. One of them ought to be traced and then its contours are compared with the sheet under examination. The watermark illustrations contained in this atlas are also printed from tracings. There are various opinions concerning the method of systematizing watermarks. Certain paleographers recommend compiling atlases by alphabetic method, others consider this method unnecessarily difficult as it is not always clear how to name the watermark. If the watermarks are compiled in chronological order then it is difficult to find the one you want because the same markings appear on many of them. The classification of watermarks according to each century is also incovenient because the centuries are not so clearly defined. It is also recommended to classify them in accordance with their type. In the present atlas the watermarks are grouped thematically by their general appearance. The names of the watermarks are given in a separate list in alphabetical order. If the watermark is known outside Lithuania then the international name is given alongside the Lithuanian. The common name of Lithuanian and Polish coats-of-arms are given in Lithuanian and Polish, the coats-of-arms of Western Europe are but briefly defined. Each watermark is listed by its number, also the date and place of the use of the paper (when and where the document was written or the book printed) and the present whereabouts of the document or book. In addition there are appropriate notes on watermarks published earlier by other authors giving the date of the use of the paper.
