The repositories of the Old Periodicals Section and of the Stock and Readers Service Department in the
Wroblewski Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences hold 153 titles of periodicals published in 1941–
1944 on the territory of present-day Lithuania. These publications are a valuable historical source that throw
light on how Lithuania lost its independence, illustrate life in the country during the time of the Soviet and
the Nazi occupations, show the spread of the occupation ideologies in press, and testify to the Lithuanian
resistance to the occupations. The periodical press for this time period has so far been little studied.
The periodicals discussed in the present article are classified into groups based on their relationship with
occupation authorities and the time period of their publication: 1) legally issued Soviet periodicals; 2) legally
issued Nazi ones; 3) those legally issued during the both occupations; 4) those illegally issued by the resistance
movement at the time of the Nazi occupation. The groups are overviewed in regard to publishing method,
place of publication, language, type of periodical and main topic. The article includes a list of titles of Lithuania’s
periodicals for 1941–1944 held by the library and indicates actual issues kept in the holdings.
Keywords: periodicals; newspapers; journals; bulletins; ephemeral periodicals; serials; underground press.
