Abstract:
Rapidly developing digital technologies and broad possibilities of iInternet make it possible
to create a new work environment for scientists – a digital archive, which can comprise a few
components, such as electronic catalogue, digital document image archive and additional information
database.
The development of an electronic catalogue, which would allow the readers to find an
information about a document and order it online, was started in 1997. The project Parchments’ Digital
Images Archive preserved in the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences
(October 2002–November 2003), sponsored by UNESCO „World Memory“ programme, is our first
attempt to implement a digital image archive. The project is presented at www.pergamentai.lt.
The implementation of another digital project in the Manuscript Department – ECH:TOPICC
– Endangered Cultural Heritage: Tools for Preservation, Investigation and Copyright Clearance, was started
in May 2003. The aim of this project is to create the software for the management of multimedia data
(text, images and sounds) and intellectual property rights as well as for the interactive internet-based
presentation of results. The old musical manuscripts (XIV–XVIII centuries) of various genres are
presented on the website www.musicalia.lt.
