The article deliberates on the travel of certain documents from Russia to the Manuscript
Department of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy of Sciences. Even for the organized groups
of returning Lihuanians and for educational institutions it was sometimes challenging to carry documents
on the way from Russia to Lithuania; meanwhile, for solitary Lithuanians the road home was
strewn with difficulties. In spite of the problems, a significant part of the documents belonging to
Lithuanian organizations was successfully relocated to Lithuania. Between the wars, the library and
the Culture Museum at the Faculty of Humanities of Vilnius University obtained some of the documents
collected from Russia. In 1950-1962, a part of the Lithuanian societies' documents brought
from Russia was transferred to the Manuscript Department of the Library of the Lithuanian Academy
of Sciences. The reasons for the transfer were the reorganization of the Kaunas State University
and the regulations of the Lithuanian Institute of Language and Literature that allowed to keep only
the documents pertaining to the subject area of the institute. Private donations also much added to
the collection.
