“Pater noster” in East Prussian Lithuanian Writings from Mažvydas to Vilentas
Anotacija, santrauka
This paper looks at the origins of the Lithuanian prayer “Pater noster” in the Enchiridion by Baltramiejus Vilentas (1before 1572, 21579). To fulfil this task, the prayer is compared with all its variants that have previously appeared in East Prussia. The article reveals that Vilentas did not retranslate it, but took it from the hymnal Giesmės krikščioniškos, part II, of Martynas Mažvydas and Baltramiejus Vilentas, to which it was transferred, almost unchanged, from the Forma krikštymo of Martynas Mažvydas. The relationship between the prayer texts, published in the previous work and the Mažvydas’ Catechism is also examined. The author is of the opinion that the text in Forma krikštymo is not a new translation, but only a new version of the previous text, edited according to the language of the western Aukštaitians of that time. The relationship between the prayer texts, published in the previuos work and the Mažvydas Catechism is also examined. The author is of the opinion that the text in Forma krikštymo is not a new translation, but only a new version of the previous text, edited according to the language of the western Aukštaitians of that time. A classification of the versions of the prayer is given at the end of the article. Keywords: Martynas Mažvydas; Baltramiejus Vilentas; catechism; prayer; translation.
